Since 2002 NetSafe has been actively involved in collecting data about the ways children and young people use Cyberspace. This research has allowed us to build an accurate picture of exactly what it is that children and young people are doing online, as well as helping us to identify some of the possible risks and risk behaviors that people could experience when they are in Cyberspace.
Our research projects in 2002, 2005 and now in 2007, help us to build a picture of the changing use of web technologies from the point of view of children and young people.
Our research has shown an exponential growth in cell phone use among children and young people - with nearly 100% of teenagers currently able to access cell phone technology.
We have also found that children and young people have changed the way they use the internet. Whereas they previously used the internet for surfing and chat-rooms, now young people are focusing on blogging, using the web as a primary source of audio and visual media, creating and publishing their own media, and establishing their own on-line presence.
Probably most notably we have seen a shift in the way in which social contacts online are established and maintained. Young people are now engaging online with friends that exist as part of both the online and offline social networks rather than with friends who remain solely as online contacts. |
