The principal’s role in creating a cybersafe school

The principal, as the chief executive of the school, implements board policies in the day-to-day administration and management of the school.

This does not mean that the principal needs to personally take on all of the extra responsibilities involved. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Being familiar with all aspects of this kit
  • Ensuring the board is made aware of the need for an appropriate school cybersafety policy
  • Delegating the role of cybersafety manager (preferably to a member of the senior management team)
  • Liaising with the cybersafety team through regular reports from the cybersafety manager
  • Keeping the board informed of the school’s on-going initiatives and programmes by regularly scheduling cybersafety as an agenda item for board meetings
  • Seeking regular briefings from the cybersafety team and demonstrating to staff and students ongoing support for the school cybersafety programme
  • Taking final management responsibility for cybersafety in the school community.

The principal also has a role if it becomes necessary for the school to respond to an issue of misuse. The NetSafe School Incident Response Flowchart can assist the cybersafety team and the principal in these instances.
