Welcome to the Hector's World Teachers' Forum

Greetings and welcome to the Hectors World forum for teachers.

By now, you have probably watched at least one of the Hector’s World episodes and may be wondering ‘how can I use this at school?’  That’s great!  The NetSafe Education team have created a series of lessons for episodes one through five for use with New Zealand year 0-6 classes.  You can download them here.

But those were just our ideas.  This forum is for you, the teachers, to discuss and share your own approaches to cybersafety.  We’d like to hear how you are using the Hector’s World episodes and other resources to teach your class about being safe and responsible cybercitizens.

So if you’ve tried our teaching plans, come up with your own, or just want to discuss your ideas about teaching cybersafety with other teachers, then there’s no time like now to start.  I’ve created a first thread to get the ball rolling, but feel free to start a new topic, or just leave a friendly hello at the bottom of this post and come back tomorrow.

As the internet becomes a more collaborative space, our messages for young children have to continually adapt to this change.  For example we say things like, don’t put your personal details online, when this is exactly what children are asked to do on all the most popular websites.

What do you think are the key messages children need to hear to help them be safe and secure cybercitizens, and how could Hector and his friends help spread these messages?
